Die 1. Woche in Lahti - First week in Lahti

Lahti – 1. Woche:

Unser erster Tag in Lahti war leider sehr regnerisch und so haben wir es uns bei Theresa in der Wohnung gemütlich gemacht.

Am Montag ging dann die Schule los!

Um 12.30 Uhr haben wir uns mit Jaana, der organisierenden Lehrerin, getroffen. Sie hat uns die Schule gezeigt und dann kamen wir auch direkt in die Klasse der Silberschmiede.  Dort bekamen wir unser Werkzeug und haben mit Arto, dem Silberschmiede-Lehrer, besprochen, was wir bisher gelernt haben und was wir in nächster Zeit machen werden. Jetzt am Anfang werden wir in der Werkstatt bleiben, später werden wir noch Emaillieren und das Steinefassen lernen.

Für den nächsten Tag bekamen wir die Aufgabe einen Löffel zu entwerfen und dann war der erste Schultag auch schon vorbei.

Dann haben wir auch gleich mit dem Löffel angefangen. Nachdem wir etwa 75 g Silber bei der Materialausgabe bekommen haben, haben wir es zu einem Stab gegossen. 

 
Danach haben wir den runden Stab auf ca. 6 mm heruntergewalzt und erhitzt. Nachdem er geglüht hat, haben wir mit der Finne eines Bretthammers auf einer Seite des Stabes eine Fläche geschlagen. Diese sollte am zukünftigen Rand etwa 1,5 mm und in der Mitte 1 mm dick sein.

Den Stab haben wir anschließend auf ca. 3 mm heruntergewalzt und dann die Form des Mundstücks ausgesägt. Die stark sichtbaren Hammerschläge entfernte ich, indem ich das Mundstück auf einen Punzen legte und diesmal von der anderen Seite mit der Bahn des Bretthammers darauf schlug. Danach bearbeitete ich die Form mit einem passenden Punzen und einem Gummihammer.
Außerdem sägte ich die Form des Stabes zurecht.

Ich stempelte den Löffel auf der Unterseite und feilte dann den Stab und die Form des Mundstücks. Mit einem kleinen Polieraufsatz polierte ich die Innenseite und schliff und polierte dann an den großen Maschinen den Rest.

Zuletzt galvanisierte ich den Löffel und polierte ihn dann mit einer Polierpaste.
Nach etwa einer Woche hatte ich ihn endlich fertig!

Lahti - 1st week:

Our first day in Lahti was unfortunately very rainy and we stayed at Theresa’s apartment.
On Monday finally the school started!
At 12:30 clock we met Jaana , the organizing teacher. She showed us the school and then we just came into the class of silversmiths. There we got our tools and discussed with Arto, the silversmithing teacher , what we have learned so far and what we will do in the next few weeks . At the beginning we will stay in that workshop, and later we will learn enamelling and stone setting.
For the next day we had to design a spoon and then the first day at school was over.

In the workshop we started to make the spoon. After we got about 75 g of silver, we melted it and poured it into a bar.

Then we rolled it until it was about 6 mm and then heated it. After the bar was annealed, I hammered one end of it. In the ending this area should be at the edge about1.5 mm and in the middle about 1 mm.

I rolled the bar down to 3 mm and then I cut the shape of the mouthpiece. After removing the visible hammer marks with another hammer, I worked on the form of the mouthpiece until I was happy with it. Therefore I used a convenient punch and a plastic hammer.
Then I sawed the shape of the bar.

I stamped the spoon on the back and after this I filed the bar and the shape of the mouthpiece.

With a small polishing attachment I polished the inside and then I grinded and polished the other parts with a bigger machine.
Finally, I galvanized the spoon and then polished it with a polishing paste.
